The Young Choreographers Workshop is a favorite workshop for new and seasoned student choreographers!

Participating dancers will begin their days with a class in contemporary, jazz, or ballet, before digging into the fundamentals of creating choreography. Our younger choreographers are given instruction on choreographic technique (based on their level of experience) and then allotted time to work on their own pieces.

Students will break midday for lunch, and return for an educational component, learning about the history of dance, studying dance videos, and exploring a variety of dance-related skills like costume design that support the work of dancers and choreographers.

Then it’s back to choreography with another session on the Choreographer’s Toolbox. One more work period gives students a chance to make adjustments to their pieces inspired by the day’s learning before leaving the studio for the day.

On Friday, the afternoon work period will be followed by an hour-long dinner break from 5 to 6 pm, and then a 6:30 - 8:00 pm invitation-only showcase of works created by our young choreographers for family and friends. Selected works will also be showcased in the HPSD Summer Performance on August 5.

In addition to these studies, students will build strength and flexibility in a daily Pilates class and learn classical ballet variations and other repertoire. Students will be placed into two groups each week to ensure maximum individualized attention and level-appropriate class work.
