NEW at HPSD - Get Out & Move/Free Running: 2021 Winter/Spring Session 2
Taught by Jeremiah O'Connor, New day - Thursdays 4:30-5:45 PM, March 22 - May 22.
Get Out & Move/Free Running is a new class for dancers ages 8-12. Curriculum includes: light tumbling, obstacle courses, and *Free Running* - a creative version of parkour in which participants use the environment to perform tricks. This is an outdoor only class. It meets at the First Unitarian Church (5650 S Woodlawn Ave) and proceeds to walkable Hyde Park locations to work out. Students will be picked up at HPSD at the conclusion of class.
Jeremiah O'Connor began studying dance at the age of 10 and got involved in gymnastics two years later as a means of supplementing his dance training. Acrobatics have remained an important component of Jeremiah's training ever since, and he has gone on to dance as a member of the Joffrey Ballet and serve as the acrobatic consultant for Billy Elliot: The Musical and other productions. Jeremiah is an instructor at The Performer's School in Highwood, Illinois and teaches Tumbling & Acrobatics at the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club.
NEW at HPSD - Pilates
Taught by Anna Sawyer, Tuesdays 8:00-8:45 AM, Virtual only
The Pilates Mat class follows the Classical Pilates method. No props are required, and our mat is our “apparatus." Emphasis is placed on building core strength and decompressing the spine through a series of full body exercises progressing in difficulty and skill level each week. Focus is placed on strength, stamina, stability, symmetry, stretch and connecting movements to the breath. This Pilates Mat class is open to 12 and up at all abilities and skill levels.
At the moment, this class meets virtually and is a drop-in only (classes must be paid for per class or with a class card). Anna Sawyer is a Pilates Apprentice with Fitness Formula Clubs. She is looking forward to moving with you! For more information on class cards and taking classes with us as an adult student, take a look at our Adult Classes page.
NEW at HPSD! - Parkour Hip Hop Fusion 2020-21 Fall Session 1 & 2
Taught by Skylar Males, curtesy of Nexus Performing Arts Company. Wednesdays 4:30-5:45 PM until January 20th, 2021.
Derived from the phrase “parcours du combattant” which means obstacle course, Parkour is a structured activity that takes place outside. The participants, or “Traceurs," aim to get from point A to Point B in the safest and most efficient way for them while pushing and exploring their limits. Through conditioning and agility training, the class is designed to build students confidence, strength and knowledge of their own body and mind. With the addition of upbeat music, the class adds hip hop elements to create a fun and exciting environment. No dance training required. Ages 7 and up.
This class will only run during Fall Session 1 & 2 but may be offered seasonally in the future. If weather does not permit class to occur at its regular time, the office will reach out to registered students to schedule a Sunday make-up class or transition the class to virtual learning for the day. Virtual learning for Parkour consists of old school hip hop and conditioning work that pertains to Parkour. Students should come to class in gym shoes or sneakers, layered clothing that reflects outdoor conditions but can handle some sweat and mobility, and a face mask.
Floor Barre: Dance Conditioning
