Teacher Assisting

The impending start of a new session means it's a great time to get involved as a teacher assistant!

Teacher assisting is a great way for kids to take on their volunteering requirements on their own. Teacher assistants are assigned a specific class for the session, and attend each week to help out in the studio, setting a positive example of listening and following directions, escorting dancers to the drinking fountain, taking attendance, and more.

Artistic Director August Tye manages the Teacher Assistants program, and interested dancers should contact her directly by emailing august@hydeparkdance.org

Hello my name is Kenshunna, and I am a twenty-two year old hip hop/ modern dancer. Dancing is something that I was born to do, it makes me feel alive. It's my happy place when I have no where else to go. I recently graduated from Illinois College; there I studied Psychology, Theatre and Dance. I even started my own dance troupe while I was in school and named them Legacy. Legacy was invented because our small town institution (Illinois College) only allowed certain dance styles to be performed at school games and events. I felt that this was problematic, no one dances the same and we all come from different places, so Legacy was created so that diverse styles of dance could be performed at the school, giving the people who loved to dance finally the opportunity to do so. I would love the opportunity to become a teaching assistant for young dancers, it will be my way of guiding them to the path of dance they dreamed of, keeping them on track and focused for the thing they love: dance.

Hi Kenshunna, Our teacher assistants program is designed for the children who attend the school, giving them the opportunity to help out with classes for kids younger than them. We do this in order to build inter-generational connections between our students, help our teacher assistants earn required volunteer hours, and provide positive role models for our younger dancers. That said, our artistic director has trained adults with dance experience in the art of dance instruction before, so it is possible she would be willing to work with you in some capacity. Our website's comments feature doesn't allow me to see your email address or notify you of my response to your comment, so if you are interested in being put in contact with our artistic director, please email admin@hydeparkdance.org. Thanks, and best of luck!
