IN MEMORIAM

Peter Rumbold (1939 – 2019)

TO HYDE PARK SCHOOL OF DANCE FAMILY AND FRIENDS:

Peter Rumbold, beloved accompanist and one of the founding spirits of Hyde Park School of Dance, died last month. For over 26 years Peter motivated and inspired the thousands of students who danced to his music. He was a friend. He was family. We miss him already.

We will celebrate Peter's life and the boundless contributions he made to our School on Saturday, June 15 at the First Unitarian Church of Chicago. The memorial service will begin at 11:00 am. Please join us!

HPSD ALUMNI, CURRENT DANCERS, AND FAMILY:

If you have not heard yet, it is with great sadness that I share the news that our beloved accompanist Peter Rumbold has passed away. I wanted to share the memorial information with you in case you are in town. I know that many of you have fond memories of Peter and would like to join us in the celebration of his life. His former Jazz band mates plan to send him off with a New Orleans Style procession at the end of the service. HPSD will honor him with dance and I was thinking of some movement you could all do from your seats (five position of the arms follow along). Please spread the word as I do not have all the email addresses for dancers and teachers who would remember Peter.

The memorial will be at the First Unitarian Church (5650 S. Woodlawn Ave) June 15th from Service 11-12, reception 12-1.

(Please be aware that this is the date of University of Chicago's Graduation and parking will be next to impossible near the church.)

I hope many of you can join us for this very special event.

Much love to you all,

August Tye
Founding Artistic Director

I learned about his passing around May 23, after one of the musicians we knew in Champaign, forwarded her memoriam to me. I met him in 1981 there, and we were married from 1988-1992. I do remember him starting to play at your school around 1992. I have tried to reach as many people as we both knew in Champaign for the last week and a half. I also am in touch with the Prohibition Orchestra of Chicago members, where he played from 2004-2013, when he had to stop due to his health issues. I understand that David Drazin, who replaced him in the POC will be playing some hymns as well as a New Orleans style sendoff at the of the service. It's a shame about the lack of parking that day with the U of Chicago graduation. It will make it much more difficult for attendees to get situated. R.I.P. Peter
