Starting Monday, April 13th, Hyde Park School of Dance will be transitioning to a virtual class schedule for the rest of the 2020 winter/spring session. We have sent emails to currently enrolled families about how to connect to the virtual class hub and provided information regarding payment and tuition options given this change to our regularly scheduled classes. If your dancer is currently enrolled for the winter/spring session and you haven't received any of these notifications, please email admin@hydeparkdance.org for updates.

Unfortunately in keeping with the social distancing guidelines put forth by city and state officials, for the first time in our 26 year history, we are postponing our annual Spring Concert indefinitely. Since this is a massive production involving nearly every student at our school, the assistance of dozens of volunteers, and the attendance of hundreds of family members, it for the safety of our entire community that we will not move forward as planned.

Information about how to utilize winter/spring 2020 make-up classes on file, our 2020-21 Company and Scholarship auditions and processes, and our summer session will be forthcoming as circumstances unfold.

These were difficult but necessary decisions given the unprecedented public health crisis we all find ourselves in. We hope at least that through these virtual classes our community can continue to stay connected, engaged, and dance together even though we have to be apart.

There will be no TYEGO Classes held for HPSD Students from March 16 - March 30. We will reassess the potential of students joining in this class at the end of the month.


Dear HPSD Families,  

Thank you for your patience throughout this process as HPSD assesses what is best for our HPSD community during the Covid-19 epidemic. HPSD has made the difficult decision to suspend classes from Monday, March 16 - Saturday, April 11, a period that includes the previously scheduled one week for the School’s spring break. Classes will continue on Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14 however rehearsals are canceled for the rest of this week. As this is not a mandated closure by the city, state or the church, Unitarian Church has decided to remain open. Dancers in levels IVB and up are invited to attend Tyego classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 - 11:30am while the school is closed if they are available during the day (except for the planned Spring Break, April 6-11). The office will not be open during regular office hours, but the administrative team will be working during this time. Please continue to stay connected with HPSD through our website and Social Media outlets for updates and tips on how dancers can keep their bodies "dance ready" during this time.  

As this situation is rapidly changing, it is our hope that we will resume normal operations on April 13.  Families will be able to schedule make-up classes in the final five weeks of our Winter/Spring session (April 13 - May 18). If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

As of Wednesday, March 11, HPSD announced that the production of Amira: A Chicago Cinderella Story  scheduled for March 28 and 29 will be postponed. The expectation is that it will be rescheduled this spring. Rehearsals and Classes are continuing as scheduled.  

Message from Unitarian Church (Studios 1, B and office): 

As we move through the worldwide challenges of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), we are taking proactive steps to keep our members and friends as safe and as healthy as possible. We continue to monitor information from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the IL Department of Public Health and the City of Chicago Department of Public Health for updates, next steps and best practices. 

First Steps:  

Our sexton and custodian are taking every precaution to clean all surfaces with CDC recommended disinfectant, including doorknobs, handrails, tables, etc.·           
Hand washing signs have gone up in all restrooms encouraging everyone to wash for at least 20 seconds·  
Hand sanitizer is being placed at the entrances to the Sanctuary and in Pennington Classrooms.   
 We will encourage members, and staff to take everyday preventive actions to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses, such as staying home when sick; appropriately covering coughs and sneezes.  
Sanitary gloves will be made available at the rear of the church·  
A COVID-19 update will be added to the weekly email and “phone tree” is being established for communication with those with no access to email 

Dear HPSD Community,  

The health and safety of our dancers and their families, faculty and staff is of our highest priority. As always, we are encouraging everyone to follow CDC guidelines for germ prevention to include:  

Washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.  
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.  
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.  
Stay home when you are sick. Please wait at least 24 hours after the fever breaks, without being on fever medication, to return to classes.  
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or inside elbow. Immediately discard tissue.  
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.  
HPSD will closely monitor dancers and will send dancers home who are sick.  

In addition to the studios being cleaned twice per week, we also provide the following:  

Disinfectant wipes at each studio to wipe down barres before and after class.  
Kleenex in each studio.  
Hand sanitizer in each studio.  

HPSD is currently reviewing our plans for our upcoming performance of Amira and school-wide events. We will provide an update soon.
