Hyde Park School of Dance alumna and instructor Kia Smith founded renowned new ensemble South Chicago Dance Theatre in 2017, and they've been making headlines ever since!
This summer, SCDT partnered with D-Composed Chicago, "an intimate chamber music experience that seeks to highlight musicians and composers within the African Diaspora." The collaboration found a home in the city's parks, through the Chicago Park District's Night Out in the Parks program, and three free and open-to-the-public performances were scheduled for late summer, featuring guest artists selected from Hyde Park School of Dance's student body (Georgia Pauley, second from left; Laila May, seated; and Isabel Roitman, second from right) alongside SCDT's professional company members.
You have two more chances to catch one of these inspired performances! In the meantime, here's what one local reviewer had to say about the debut:
"The event closed with dancers and the string quartet joining forces. The music was 'Parks' by Daniel Bernard Roumain. The dancers featured emerging artists from Hyde Park School of Dance, Georgia Pauley and Isabel Roitman (both Hyde Parkers), and South Chicago Dance Theatre dancers Dorianne Thomas and Julia Schaeffer. The collaboration was a great success, with four women making music and four women dancing to it, creating a complex web of music and movement. . . . This free performance in a local park captured so much of what is true about music and dance: they are for everyone, rich and poor, young and old. And they are not dusty attic relics but living forms of art, renewed and re-invigorated by generation after generation." (M. L. Rantala for the Hyde Park Herald)
Forthcoming performances are September 6th and 13th.
