Hyde Park School of Dance is well-represented in Lyric Opera's beautiful Arin Arbus production of the Verdi classic, running through March 22nd.
August Tye, HPSD's founding and current Artistic Director, has long served as Ballet Mistress at Lyric, and worked in that capacity on La Traviata this season. This time, though, Tye has company in repping Hyde Park School of Dance at the Civic Opera House!
HPSD alumna-turned-accomplished-mezzo-soprano Zoie Reams sings the role of Flora beautifully in her Lyric Opera debut, "providing a carefree and pleasing Flora. Reams is a Hyde Park native and former Chicago Children’s Choir member who now lives in Bronzeville. Her introduction to the stage came when she studied as a child at Hyde Park School of Dance with August Tye, Lyric Opera’s ballet mistress." (M.L. Rantala for the Hyde Park Herald)
The Herald's article on the production also mentions soprano Albina Shagimuratova's recent bout of laryngitis, noting that she had stepped down from the principle role, Violetta, earlier in the run, but Shagimuratova's back, and she's sounding excellent as ever! One more reason to see this gorgeous iteration of the beloved opera featuring two very talented members of the Hyde Park School of Dance family.
